A Fulton County police corporal who was shot during a violent April gun battle has been hailed as a hero after saving the life of a fellow officer in the chaos.

Shootout on Fulton Industrial Boulevard

On April 18, Corporal Zahir Muid observed a man jaywalking on Fulton Industrial Boulevard and moved to approach him. When South Fulton Police Lt. Charles Cook pulled over to assist, officers discovered the suspect, later identified as Rashan Cofield, had an active warrant.

As they moved to arrest him, Cofield pulled a pistol and opened fire while fleeing. In the exchange, Lt. Cook was shot in the arm, severing a major artery. Muid, though also injured, ran to fashion a tourniquet and applied it to Lt. Cook’s arm, minimizing the bleeding and ultimately saving his life

Honored for Heroism

Cofield was killed in the shootout, but the split-second actions of Cpl. Muid did not go unnoticed.

On September 3, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners recognized Corporal Zahir Muid Appreciation Day. On August 20, he was also honored as the 2025 Officer of the Year by ASIS International, an organization of security professionals.

Officials said Muid’s courage under fire is a testament to the training that equips officers with lifesaving tools and to his own determination not to let his colleague die on the street that day.
