UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT: A youth softball coach in Georgia allegedly turned a postgame handshake into a violent confrontation, police say. Authorities allege Meredith Haskew Grant, 36, grabbed another coach by the hair and punched her in the face as players and coaches gathered after an 8-and-under game. Grant was charged with misdemeanor battery after video of the incident showed her as the aggressor.

A youth softball game in northwest Georgia is now drawing national attention after a fight between adults at the pitcher’s mound was caught on video.

It happened in Dalton during an 8U game involving the Wreckers and GA Fury Platinum Harris teams on April 4.

Video shared online shows coaches confronting each other after the teams meet at the pitcher’s mound after the game. You can hear parents yelling for children to “get in the dugout.”

The video has since spread widely on social media and national sports platforms.

An arrest report from Dalton Police says Meredith Haskew Grant told them the opposing team was making unsportsmanlike comments about her daughter during the game.

She told police that one of the opposing coaches “got in her face” when the two teams met to say the traditional good game.

But officers then reviewed the video and the police report says Grant was the aggressor.

The report says Grant shoved one of the opposing coaches.

When another coach tried to separate them, he was “pushed by Meredith.”

The report says Grant then grabbed a female coach by the hair and “pulled her to the ground and punched her in the face.”

When we reached out to that female coach, Lauren Stithem, she told us…

I’m just going to let the video speak to her character. At the end of the day, my coaching staff and myself know the truth. The video doesn’t lie.”

The Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office says Grant was arrested the same day and charged with misdemeanor battery. She has since bonded out of the Whitfield County Jail.

The state director of the United States Fastpitch Association, Jeff Britt, says that Grant can no longer coach in any of their future tournaments.

A social media post from the team Grant coached in the tournament shows she was inducted into the East Ridge High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2024.

The incident has also sparked a reaction from those in the nearby sports community.

Corey Harvey, a Dalton-based umpire and content creator who shared the video, said fighting has no place in youth sports.

I’ve umpired 25 years and witnessed a lot, this is the one thing you don’t do,” Harvey said. “When it comes to children and the ball field, fighting is zero tolerance and you will go to jail, you will get banned now.

Northwest tournament director Brent Hamill told us on Tuesday that the situation was handled the right way.

It was handled on our end using the proper local authorities. This incident has nothing to do with us, but it was handled the proper way as far as the consequences,” Hamill said.
