Emily Wickersham has finally opened up about Ellie Bishop’s long-awaited return to NCIS and revealed why she decided to step back into the beloved role after nearly five years away.
Fans last saw Bishop in 2021 when the former NSA analyst shared a passionate goodbye kiss with Nick Torres before leaving on a secret CIA mission. Now, she’s officially returning in the March 3 episode — and according to Wickersham, coming back felt completely natural.
In an interview with TV Insider, the actress explained that she was excited to revisit such a familiar character and environment. She admitted she hadn’t kept up with the series much recently because she’s been busy raising her children, but she immediately welcomed the opportunity to return.
Wickersham also teased that Bishop has changed dramatically since fans last saw her. Much like the actress herself, the character has experienced major life changes and emotional struggles over the years.
“She’s been through things she never experienced while working at NCIS,” Wickersham shared, hinting that Bishop now carries emotional scars and a heavier past. While she stopped short of calling the character “darker,” she confirmed that this version of Bishop comes with much more emotional baggage.
Her return won’t be smooth, however. Bishop is now wanted for cyberterrorism, and Agent Jessica Knight has been tasked with tracking her down. Preview photos even show Torres tied up, suggesting the reunion could quickly become chaotic.
Wickersham also hinted there will be unresolved tension between Bishop and Torres, especially after their emotional goodbye kiss. Fans can also expect reactions from McGee and Kasie, who were left with many unanswered questions after Bishop’s sudden departure.
NCIS season 23 returns Tuesday, March 4 at 8/7c on CBS, and fans are eager to see how Ellie Bishop’s shocking comeback will unfold.
