Mel Schilling’s devastated husband reveals the emotional final moments he shared with the MAFS star before her death at 54. Her final whisper left him in tears — and what she said about their daughter changed everything
Mel Schilling’s husband has shared the heartbreaking final moments he spent with the Married At First Sight star before her death, revealing that even in her last seconds, her thoughts were with her family.
The beloved dating expert, known to millions for her role on both the Australian and UK versions of Married At First Sight, died aged 54 after a devastating cancer battle.
Her husband, Gareth Brisbane, announced the tragic news in an emotional Instagram post, saying Mel passed away peacefully surrounded by love. But it was the final moment they shared that left the deepest mark on him.

Gareth revealed that when he believed cancer had already taken away her ability to speak, Mel gathered the last of her strength to pull him closer and deliver one final whispered message for him and their daughter Maddie, 10.
He wrote: “Melanie Jane Brisbane-Schilling passed away peacefully today, surrounded by love.”
He then shared the detail that has left fans in tears, explaining: “In her final moments, when I thought cancer had taken away her ability to speak, she ushered me closer and whispered a message for Maddie and me that will sustain me for the rest of my life.”

Gareth said that final act captured exactly who Mel was. “It took all of her remaining strength, and that gesture summed up our wee Melsie perfectly. Even then, her only thought was for Maddie and me.”
Paying tribute to the woman behind the TV career, he described Mel as someone extraordinary both on and off screen. He said: “This is a woman who became a new mum and a TV star at 42 — and nailed both.”
He also reflected on the strength she showed throughout her illness, writing: “This is a woman who, through two years of chemotherapy, when she could barely lift her head from the pillow, never complained and never stopped showing courage, grace, compassion and empathy, and never missed a day of filming.”
To viewers, Mel was one of the defining faces of Married At First Sight. But to her family, Gareth said she was something even more special. “To most of you, she was Mel Schilling — matriarch of MAFS and queen of reality TV. To Maddie and me, she was our wee Melsie: an incredible mum, role model, and soulmate.”

Mel was first diagnosed with colon cancer in 2023 after suffering severe stomach cramps while filming the Australian version of the hit dating show. She later underwent surgery to remove a 5cm tumour and, for a time, believed she had been given the all clear.
But the cancer returned and spread. In a devastating Instagram post shared on March 12, Mel told fans that after nodules were found in her lungs in February 2024, she endured 16 rounds of chemotherapy while continuing to film MAFS.
She said she had remained hopeful after being told she was eligible for a groundbreaking clinical trial tailored to her gene type, which was due to begin in March 2026. But over Christmas, she began suffering blinding headaches and numbness down her right side. Further tests then revealed the cancer had spread to the left side of her brain.
Despite radiotherapy, Mel was later told there was nothing more doctors could do.
In her own heartbreaking words, she told fans: “Hearing those words changes everything. So that’s where I am now. My light is starting to fade — and quickly.”
She used her final public message not only to share the truth about her illness, but to urge others not to ignore warning signs. “If I could leave you with one thing, it would simply be this: if something doesn’t feel right, please get it checked out. It might just save your life.”
Mel also made clear where her heart remained until the end, referring to Gareth and Maddie in the photo beside her as “my everything.”
The star is survived by her husband Gareth and their daughter Maddie. In her final weeks, she had stepped back from work to spend precious time with her family — the people who mattered most to her right until the very end.
